My first experience at this facility in 2004 was really wonderful. Diagnosis, treatment and home follow up was terrific. Also this visit was a one on one treatment plan with basically one Doctor. However on my second visit 4 years later it was a nightmare. Admitting Felix with a diagnosis of kidney failure was a losing battle since this is a terminal disease, however after being there 32 hrs.and $2700 later I pulled him to follow up at my regular vet where I should have taken him in the first place. While at GSVS I couldn't tell you how many interns I spoke to with different opinions as to what should be done. This was a terrible experience and I was heartbroken. Leaving this facility with only 2 med's a heart pill and ringer solution, with no compassion, input or med's to help him through what little time was left. I will never go to them again ever.

Comments = I don't usually participate in these types of things but my experience at Garden State Vet Specialists was very troubling. They seemed so insensitive and clearly focused only on costs and receiving payment UPFRONT, Prior to any treatment being done, I understand they run a business but maybe they should remember that if they are going to charge human rates for their services that maybe they should act human in the process. $ 5,500 later we still lost our Molly...

Comments = This is obviously a well equipped hospital, but hope your pet does not get sick or injured over the weekend. It's like two separate hospitals during the week as compared to the weekends. I would suggest researching a hospital who was more consistent.
I know I will if my pet ever needs emergency care ever again. I also would suggest pet insurance !

Comments = I am reading all these reviews about Garden State Veterinary Specialists and have come to a conclusion regarding this institution; At the very least people are passionate about their care at this hospital, whether it be negative or positive. My rating is based on my experience that was pretty bad. Without getting into the details I just think they could be more sympathetic to people who can't afford very expensive treatments. They shouldnt make people feel that its all about the money, even if it might be. It's hard enough having to live with the fact that maybe you could have saved your loved one but didnt have money to even try. It's a horrible feeling of guilt that never goes away and is very painful.

Comments = When Lambros was seriously ill and our local vet referred us to garden state, we were naturally quite upset and, yes, scared. But, their excellent care saved our puppy from the jaws (pun intended) of death, when seemingly there was no other option/hope. While we sat patinetly, or should I say paced the floor and wiggled in our seats for a few hours, the office staff comforted us, even serving us drinks and chips. Lambros made a full recovery and our consults with the surgeon and intern were nothing short of exactly what any pet owner would 'hope for' in this terrible situation and at our time of need. We are and will always be indebted to them. If this site is about quality of life and pet care, garden state gets a 5 STAR RATING FROM THIS FAMILY!

Comments = This hospital saved my dog, no question. They ARE expensive, but they also ARE true specialists, and in my case at least, showed total compassion to me and Smoky. I hope to never need their swervices again, but if needed, I will most surely use them again also..and refer them, as I have already many times, to friends and family who care about their pets :)

Comments = We took our pet cat to Garden State and they were ALL very compassionate to us and Bubbles. I agree a bit with the last person who posted, but, this is still America the last I checked and you DO often get what you pay for. At GS, you definitely get what you pay for...and that is the epitome of top notch veterinary care and also in our case and everyone else I know the highest level quality of life treatment for the family and the patient/pet. Nothing against the other hospitals listed here or even the many other local choices, but you can have a hamburger at McDonalds or at Cipriani's in Manhattan...I prefer the latter...and yes, luckily I am able to afford it, but, as I stated earlier, the quality of care and human compassion offered also far exceeded our dreams at Garden State. I wonder how many people here that post are simply upset at the cost of quality health care, and in the name of something else, are talking bad about this fine hospital. Shame on them if that is the case. I have often found that when a lot of people say "it's not the price it's the 'principle'", it's almost always 'the price'.

Comments = I had two experiences with this hospital, one of them very good and most recently very bad. The first was to diagnose a rare disease that helped our pet very much (several years ago) and more recently an emergency situation involving no actual diagnosis and resulting in our pets death. Death is not pleasant, neither is a diagnosis of a rare disease. So are they a good hospital ? I think we need to realize that every situation is different and life and death results are usually in gods hands, however after reviewing many of the posted stories I think that GSVS may want to look in to some kind of company training that educates their employees on customer communications with an emphasis on properly providing a thorough orientation on all options and risks for all treatments. Most importantly they should focus on some of the younger employees who need training on customer service. We also have to remember that this is a hospital with over 30 employees and much like human hospitals you will never receive the same care and attention that your normal doctor might give you. The best thing you can do is don't wait until an emergency to research a hospital you might feel more comfortable with, start now and be prepared before something terrible happens.

Comments = Please....Who are these people but arrogant, disconnected and cowardly. Watch out for the insensitive wicked witch of the west "Dr. Demarco" or the completely removed "Fat Cat" owner Dr. Scavelli, who only comes out of his cave when yelled at or threatened with a a law suit. Stay clear of this hospital who has obviously lost their way. My GOD, help us all !!!!!!!

Comments = Just don't care for the doctors at this hospital. They just keep pushing and pushing for this test and that test and make me feel like a jerk because I don't agree. Why do they need to do so many tests before they can make my baby feel better. Why do they treat animals with human medicine ? Could they try and be a liitle nicer and sympathetic ?

Comments = I took my pet to Garden State Vet. Spec. and I had a great experience. There was always a doctor on staff to answer my questions, I was always kept up to date on my pet's care, the receptionist were very nice, and my pet received great treatment. I recommend this hospital to others. I did read some of the previous reviews and I will say that with all medical care, humane or animal, not everyone will be happy. All doctors practice differently, and unfortunately there isn't medical coverage with pets like there are with people. So if you do have an animal or plan on getting one, expect to spend a lot of money because they need care like we do and this is the place to get it.

Comments = Our entire extended family have bene loyal clients of GS for many years now. Our most recent visit was just a short time ago and we were treated witht he utmost of care and respect, as was our shining star Sheba, the joy of our home. A neighbor referred us there about eight years ago and for us, they are a godsend of medicine and 'quality of life' issues. We wholeheartedly urge anyone who loves their pets as much as we do to use GS for their critical care and advanced surgery needs of their dog and/or cat.

Comments = My husband and I brought our cat Kiwi to Garden State because it was a Saturday and our vet was closed for the weekend. We came home from shopping and noticed our cat had urinated on the couch and was still sitting right on top on the hugh wet area. They did an examination and blood test and after a very large fee told us nothing was wrong with her. We believed them, we went on vacation and when we returned we found our cat in end stage kidney failure, she had a large tumor on her kidney and we had to put her down. I don't think Garden State could have changed the outcome but I do believe they could have at least been able to give us a diagnosis so we could have helped our Kiwi instead of coming home from vacation to see her in such a state. They are supposed to be specialist and our regular Vet was better able to diagnois and treat our cat, giving us the guidance that we needed to help make the right decision. Never again will I return to Garden State Veterinary Specialist.

Comments = If you like gambling at Atlantic City then you will love losing your money at Garden State Veterinary Specialists located in Tinton Falls, NJ. They are manipulative, exploitative, insensitive & flooded with inexperienced interns that cost them nothing while they run up your bills whether your pet needs tests or not; and all this while they count their blood money ! or should I say our money.

Comments = I went to GSV over 6 years ago when my Aussie Terrier successively needed 2 leg surgeries. I was very pleased with the outcomes and the staff there, including Dr. Scavelli, whom I met w/personally. I am sad to see so many bad comments about GSV in recent years; maybe their staff needs some sensitivity training. Unfortunately, they are expensive and I could see how people feel cornered at the worst possible time, dealing w/a sick pet.

Comments = Dr. Scavelli reviewed the procedure for feline hyperthyroid (radioiodide) and followup care with us in detail, and returned calls always. During her stay, they didn't always call with daily updates as promised, but were always attentive when I called them. Our cat was happy-go-lucky on coming home, indicating she was well treated there. First followup with our regular vet showed she was cured, Excellent care, highly recommended, and I am very picky about my pets' care. Money well spent.
